Samsung is already working on a tri-fold device, reportedly called the G Fold. Leaks suggest it could feature a 6.48-inch cover screen and a 9.96-inch main display. Just so you know, it will have an inward-folding mechanism, unlike the Huawei Mate X, which folds outward. Samsung has already filed numerous patents and concepts for tri-fold devices. However, a new patent under the name Samsung Display has been spotted, hinting at a triple-folding Flip device—perhaps a G Flip?
Samsung’s new patent hints at tr-folding Flip, perhaps a G Flip
A newly surfaced Samsung Display patent on the US WIPO certification website (via 91Mobiles) details a tri-fold Flip concept. The schematics show a rectangular slab when fully unfolded, with minimal bezels on two sides and thicker bezels on the others. One of these bezels features three cutouts, which could house a triple-camera setup or possibly speakers. Apart from that, we can see side buttons and a USB-C port. From the looks of it, this could very well be the G Flip or another triple-folding Flip iteration.
To give you an idea of how the G Flip—or a triple-folding Flip iteration—could look, check out the Infinix Zero. The China-based phone maker showcased it during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, demonstrating just how fun and compact flip phones can be. The fact that Samsung has filed a patent along similar lines suggests the company has already envisioned it—because why not?
But before you get your hopes too high, keep in mind that Samsung frequently files patents like these. However, not all of them lead to actual products.
On top of that, Samsung Display is a major supplier of display components. So, if Samsung MX (the mobile division) doesn’t move forward with a tri-fold Flip phone, Samsung Display could still provide the technology to another smartphone brand. In that case, we might still see a Samsung-made tri-fold Flip—just not from Samsung itself.
