Samsung Display has cleared a crucial hurdle that could the future of OLED laptops. It has reportedly pushed its 8.6th generation OLED yields past 90%. This puts it in a strong position to supply panels for the upcoming MacBook Pro models.

Samsung’s OLED yields hit 90% and that’s big news for MacBooks

According to The Elec, that jump happened fast. Yields climbed from just over 80% to above 90% in a little over a month, and that’s the real story here. In display manufacturing, hitting that level means the process is finally stable enough for mass production.

Samsung Display is currently running one production line with a capacity of 7,500 sheets per month, about half of what its full setup can handle. That might sound conservative, but it gives the company room to scale quickly if demand kicks in.

The timing lines up with Apple’s plans. Samsung is expected to begin mass production soon, with shipments aimed at Apple MacBook Pro models in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. Industry estimates suggest around two million panels could ship this year, with deliveries likely starting in June.

Laptop OLED panels are a different beast compared to smartphone screens. They’re larger, stay on longer, and need better brightness and uniformity. Samsung is tackling this with tandem structures and advanced backplanes, but getting high yields at scale is where the real challenge lies.

Some individual processes have even reached 95% yield, often called a golden yield. That doesn’t apply to the entire production chain yet, but it’s still a strong signal that things are moving in the right direction for stable output.

Meanwhile, competitors like BOE are still working through yield and consistency issues. If Apple’s OLED MacBook strategy pays off, Samsung could ramp up quickly and bring more lines online. For now, it’s clearly ahead of the pack.
