Samsung has teamed up with South Korean wireless giant KT to introduce a smarter mobile network solution, so users get the best possible connection. They have successfully developed and tested artificial intelligence (AI)-based wireless network optimization technology. The two companies plan to conduct further testing in a beta environment in the second half of the year.

KT and Samsung develop AI-based wireless network

Traditionally, mobile networks connect everyone to a single base station (Cell) with the same network settings. The reason is that networks can not identify and respond to each user’s situation in real time. Thanks to the AI-based smart network system, this is now changing.

According to a report from Newsis, KT Future Network Research Institute and Samsung Research have jointly developed AI-based wireless network optimization technology. This innovative technology will allow the network to identify the usage environment, such as individual user signal stability. It will then automatically apply optimal settings for each user in different environments.

This new technology is a step toward AI-based wireless networks (AI-RAN) that will be introduced in the future. AI-RAN is a next-generation intelligent wireless network technology that allows the network to make its own smart decisions as well as adjustments.

“The results of this joint research are an important case that proves that the application of AI can improve the user experience quality in communications networks,” said Jeong Jin-guk, head of the Next Generation Communications Research Center at Samsung Research (Vice President). “We plan to continuously realize technological innovation through the convergence of communications and AI.”

Lee Jong-sik, Executive Director and head of the Future Network Research Center at KT, also said that it is a meaningful example that shows the potential of AI-based wireless network technology. Lee added that KT will continue to develop innovative technologies and work closely with partners to lead 6G.

Note that this technology has been developed for South Korea. However, as the 6G network era approaches, we may get such smarter network systems globally in the future. After all, AI will play a big role in shaping the future of wireless connectivity.
