OpenAI Teams Up With Industry Leaders to Develop AI Phone

OpenAI appears to be planning to step into the smartphone industry. The company is reportedly working with industry leaders to develop an AI phone, though it might not arrive until 2028. The device could serve as a solid AI companion that greatly improves day-to-day tasks.

OpenAI’s AI phone could redefine the smartphone experience

According to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI has teamed up with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop the processors for its phone. Luxshare will be the exclusive system co-design and manufacturing partner. The company reportedly targets mass production in 2028, suggesting the device could launch around that time.

OpenAI has yet to finalize the device’s specifications and supplier choices. These are expected to be decided by late 2026 or early 2027. The company’s move to make a phone is likely because it wants to take full advantage of the AI technology. “Only by fully controlling both the operating system and hardware can OpenAI deliver a comprehensive AI agent service,” Kuo notes.

Furthermore, the smartphone can capture a user’s full real-time context, allowing AI systems to understand and respond quickly. This makes it a solid platform for real-time AI agent functions. With the smartphone business expected to remain strong for the foreseeable future, OpenAI would not need to think twice about entering this space.

The AI phone could use a mix of cloud and on-device computing. Kuo says the device needs to constantly understand the user’s context. As such, the company could consider factors such as power consumption, memory management, and running small AI models while designing the processor. At the same time, cloud-based AI systems may play a key role in handling complex tasks.

OpenAI has an advantage in this space because of its leading AI models and large user base. Since smartphone hardware is already mature, the company now needs to work with supply chain partners to build the device. There’s chatter that it may also introduce subscription services.
