Despite the beta program, One UI 8.5 remains deep in development, but Samsung is already looking ahead. The company has set its sights on the next major release, One UI 9, which will be based on Android 17. While work continues behind the scenes, here’s an early glimpse at what could debut alongside the 2026 foldables.

This is your first look at One UI 9’s software update header

One UI 8.5 changes the software update screen to have a header image above it. That is handled by a separate app, aptly named Software Update. In a recent internal build, a newer version of this app included the image in its files, labeled “major.” Combined with the image clearly resembling the number 9, this confirms it is the banner image for One UI 9.

This isn’t entirely unexpected, however. Samsung treats One UI x.5 releases as minor updates, delivering UI refinements without an Android version bump, while One UI x.0 releases are positioned as major updates that debut alongside a new version of Android. In this case, the One UI 9 will be based on Android 17.
