One UI 7.0 Delay May Extend Further as Google Delays Android 15

by | Aug 26, 2024 | News, One UI

Samsung fans are eagerly awaiting the One UI 7.0 beta. The beta testing period for One UI typically commences in mid to late August, but that is certainly not the case in 2024. One UI 7.0 may be the largest overhaul of Samsung’s mobile OS in many years, some delays are expected. We previously reported on several delays impacting the launch of the beta and we now have more bad news.

pixel and source code android releases

Pixel and source code Android releases (from Android Authority)

Google held their Pixel 9 launch event a few weeks ago. At the event, the company announced the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, as well as new buds and watches. Absent from the Pixel event this year, was any mention of Android 15. Google is known for launching the latest version of Android on their new Pixel devices. Some believed that Google would push out an OTA later in August for Pixel 9 owners, but that is not the case. Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority revealed that Google has no plans to roll out Android 15 in August or September.

How will this impact One UI 7.0 beta testing?

This news comes as a surprise given Google’s track record of launching new Android updates alongside the source code availability. Postulating a reason for the delay, Rahman cites stability concerns for the new software. It is possible that Android 15 arrives on Pixel devices in mid-October. How will this impact Samsung and the One UI 7.0 beta timeline? It’s hard to say exactly, as Samsung definitely has access to the Android 15 source code, through their partnership with Google. On the other hand, Samsung’s may wait for Google to iron out any stability issues before pushing the beta. It would be wise to wait for stability in the base Android 15 code, since Samsung adds many features on top in One UI.

Many Samsung leakers on X, including Tarun Vats, stated that the internal testing of One UI 7.0 is still very buggy. At the earliest, we may see Samsung roll out the One UI 7.0 beta in mid to late September. If Google’s bugs persist and this slows Samsung’s development, it could be October before testing begins. The beta period should be much shorter this year, allowing for a stable release before the end of 2024.
