Mystery Coil in Galaxy S25 Ultra Sparks S Pen Speculation, But Don’t Get Too Excited

PhoneRepairGuruRecent teardowns of the Galaxy S25 Ultra have revealed a surprising detail regarding its S Pen. Despite the new stylus missing a built-in battery for Bluetooth connectivity, effectively cutting off remote gestures, the S Pen dock appears to have a charging coil. Does this mean Samsung plans to sell a separate Bluetooth-enabled S Pen for the Galaxy S25 Ultra at some point? Well, it still looks unlikely because the coil we see might not actually charge the stylus.

Galaxy S25 Ultra still has a copper coil inside the S Pen dock

When Samsung announced the Galaxy S25 Ultra, it made it clear that the S Pen had lost Air Actions support. This is because the new S Pen doesn’t have a built-in battery, which is required for Bluetooth-powered remote gestures. Everyone, including us, assumed the company did this to make the phone lighter and more compact. With no battery inside the S Pen, Samsung didn’t need to provide a charging coil, freeing up additional space inside the phone.

However, recent teardown videos of the Galaxy S25 Ultra by JerryRigEverything and PhoneRepairGuru on YouTube unveiled a shocking secret. The S Pen dock still has a copper coil similar to the S24 Ultra, which supports Air Actions. Now the main question is: Why did Samsung leave the coil inside the new phone if the S Pen no longer has Bluetooth or a battery?

One possibility is that Samsung may introduce a separate, Bluetooth-powered S Pen for the S25 Ultra in the future, potentially as an optional accessory. However, before you get too excited, let us tell you that Samsung currently uses this coil to detect whether the S Pen is inside the phone. It appears to use NFC to detect if the stylus has been fully inserted into its silo. The coil itself looks a bit different from the one found inside the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

This doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t charge a compatible S Pen. As JerryRigEverything notes, the coil could deliver power for the inductive charging of a stylus. It is merely a theory though, with no concrete evidence that the S25 Ultra can charge a Bluetooth S Pen. The new flagship doesn’t support S24 Ultra’s S Pen and has no Air Actions menu anywhere. Whether this move is a step towards a new optional accessory remains to be seen. But, for now, the mystery of the S Pen charging coil continues.
