AI features have been available for smartphones for quite a while, to be honest, with the help of one app or another. However, things are taking a significant turn lately, with a larger portion of these AI functionalities preparing to run locally – or on-device. That’s thanks to powerful chipsets such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite. So much so that the upcoming Galaxy S25 could prefer some AI features on-device instead of relying on the cloud.
Galaxy S25 line could prioritize on-device AI processing over cloud
As spotted by highly-skilled “code surgeon” AssembleDebug (via Android Police), the upcoming Galaxy S25 line will feature more on-device AI features. While reviewing the code, he stumbled upon something exciting. There were hints about on-device AI processing coming to the Galaxy S25 series, which is, again, thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
The code mentions the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and references several intriguing tools: FEATURE_WALLPAPER, FEATURE_INOUT_PAINTING, and FEATURE_GEN_EDIT_ON_DEVICE. The latter strongly suggests on-device generative AI photo editing capabilities.
The code also hints at “inpainting” and “outpainting” techniques. While it’s still somewhat of a mystery how much of this will happen on the device itself, Samsung is clearly on the right track when it comes to boosting on-device AI. At a time when privacy is a greater concern than anything else, on-device AI could be a significant selling point for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S25 series.
Furthermore, there is ample evidence now that the upcoming Galaxy S25 line will house Snapdragon chips across regions. This also corroborates a series of previous leaks over the month, suggesting that there won’t be an Exynos-housed S25 variant in select markets such as Europe, India, and more.
Having said that, the Galaxy S25 series will be hitting the shelves on January 22 at Galaxy Unpacked 2025. There might be four Galaxy S25 phones this time, including the S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, and S25 Slim.
