Google Messages Rolls Out 14-Line Compose Box to Improve Messaging

A few weeks ago, a report suggested that Google is working to increase the compose box size limit of its Messages app. The company is now rolling out this change via an update for the app. It should reach all eligible Galaxy users over the coming few days.

Google fixes annoying compose box limit in Messages app

Google Messages currently caps the compose box at just four visible lines, forcing users to scroll through their message when they exceed that limit. This frustrated several users, particularly when they review or edit longer messages before sending them. It often led to a poor messaging experience, as it could cause misspellings, formatting issues, and other mistakes.

Thankfully, Google has now addressed this long-standing annoyance by increasing the box size limit to 14 visible lines. It allows users to see everything they typed before sending, making longer conversations smoother. According to 9to5Google, Google has started rolling out the new 14-line text field limit with the latest stable build 20250519_04_RC00 of the Messages app.

Right now, it’s unclear if the latest version is rolling out widely or gradually, but rest assured, you will soon get the newest stable build on your Galaxy device. You can keep an eye out for the update by heading over to the Google Play Store and searching for the app. This is a practical improvement that can significantly enhance your messaging experience.

Meanwhile, Android 16’s Material 3 Expressive design is making its way into the Google Messages app. At the moment, the makeover has been applied to the chat interface only, though we can expect the entire app to adopt the new design in the future. Additionally, Google has improved the contact list UI of its messaging platform to differentiate RCS-enabled users. This will help users know if their contacts support richer messaging features.
