Google Makes It Easier to Know Who’s Using RCS in Messages App

Google is trying different ways to make Messages users try its RCS features. The company is reportedly rolling out a “New chat” page for the app that lets you see RCS-enabled contacts. This makes it easier for users to take advantage of richer messaging features such as typing indicators, high-res media sharing, and more.

New Google Messages UI makes RCS contacts easier to spot

Last month, a report revealed that Google is enhancing its Messages app’s contact list UI to differentiate RCS-enabled users. It looks like Google is now rolling out the redesigned UI, as some users have reported receiving it. As spotted by a Reddit user, the RCS tag is now showing beside RCS-enabled phone numbers to help users know if their contacts support richer messaging features.

Meanwhile, 9to5Google confirmed the rollout of the latest version of the Messages app, sharing some other changes as well. At first glance, you can see that the “New conversation” term has changed to “New chat” page, which closely aligns with RCS. The new page does not show any indicators if a saved contact uses traditional SMS.

The publication further points out that the RCS-enabled number adopts Dynamic Color theming, while SMS/MMS conversations just have black or white text depending on the system theme. This shows that Google wants to offer a clearer experience for users by visually differentiating between RCS and traditional SMS contacts.

Previously, the process of identifying RCS-enabled contacts was lengthy — you had to tap a number to check if it said “Text message” or “RCS message” at the bottom. Now, the latest version saves you that step and makes it easier to see who in your family or friend group is using RCS.

As for when you can expect to get the latest version, you will probably have to wait for a few days. For now, Google is rolling out the new UI to beta users of the Messages app globally. Keep checking the Play Store for the latest updates — the latest version may land on your device at any moment.
