A few weeks ago, ChatGPT drove everyone crazy with those trendy Ghibli edits. Soon after, others, including Grok, jumped on the bandwagon. And while the trend may have lost a bit of steam, Google Photos might just bring it back from the dead. An app teardown reveals that Google Photos could be quietly cooking up a “Remix” feature.

Google Photos could soon let you apply artistic filters using “Remix”

As spotted by AssembleDebug (via Android Authority), Google appears to be gearing up to launch a new AI-powered feature in its Photos app called “Remix,” which will let users transform their images into a variety of creative art styles. AssembleDebug uncovered the clues in Google Photos app v7.29. It includes several strings hinting at the upcoming feature. Internally, it’s dubbed “bluejay,” but it looks set to make its debut as “Remix.”

When it rolls out, Remix might bring a playful twist to photo editing. It’ll offer styles like anime and claymation, with more options likely to roll in over time. To use Remix, users will need to have their photos backed up to the cloud. Once enabled, the process seems pretty straightforward. You could tap the “+” button, choose Remix, and pick an art style. Each creation is powered by experimental generative AI, and users can keep hitting refresh until they land on something they like.

Of course, Studio Ghibli-inspired artwork will be part of the mix. While there’s no official launch date yet, signs suggest it’s right around the corner. Google has been steadily leveling up the Photos app with upgrades like better search and Ultra HDR support for older pictures. And with Google I/O 2025 just around the corner, there’s a good chance Remix will take the stage. All things considered, we probably won’t have to wait long.
