Google is continuing its push to replace Google Assistant with Gemini across smart home, but the transition has been far from smooth. Some familiar features have been missing, which has slowed adoption for many users. Now, Google is bringing back one of the most requested capabilities to make everyday interactions feel more natural again.

Continued Conversation arrives for Gemini for Home

Google has started rolling out Continued Conversation for Gemini for Home (via 9to5Google). It lets you speak follow-up commands without repeating the “Hey Google” wake phrase every time. Once Gemini responds, your smart speaker or display keeps the microphone active for a few seconds, allowing a more fluid back-and-forth.

You’ll know it’s listening if the device lights continue to pulse. During that window, you can ask another question or give a new command without starting from scratch. More importantly, Gemini now keeps track of context better than the old Assistant, so you don’t have to repeat details.

For example, if you ask about the weather in Tokyo, you can simply say “What about tomorrow?” and Gemini will understand you’re still talking about the same place. This also makes tasks like cooking, planning, or managing lists quicker and more intuitive.

Google says the feature is rolling out globally across supported languages and regions, not just English. It also includes improved “side-talk” detection, which should help the assistant ignore conversations that aren’t meant for it.

Continued Conversation is currently available to early access users and needs to be enabled manually in the Google Home app under Gemini for Home settings. To do that, you need to head to Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation.
