Gemini Voices on Google Home Sound…a Bit Strange Right Now

Google continues replacing Google Assistant with Gemini across its smart home ecosystem, but the transition hasn’t been perfectly smooth. From numerous bugs, we have a new bug with Gemini voices on Google Home.
Users notice odd accent choices
According to Android Authority, some users say Gemini’s voice options sound unusual, especially when it comes to accents. Instead of hearing the typical English-language assistant voices they expected, several users noticed that many of the available voices sound like non-native English speakers.
The discussion started after a user posted about the issue on Reddit. According to users in the thread, many of the voices sound like they have South Asian, Italian, or Spanish accents. Only a couple of sounds are closer to typical English voices people are used to from digital assistants. I noticed the bug too.
Another source of confusion comes from how Google labels the voices. Most of them use abstract names like Bloom or Croton instead of identifying the accent directly. One of the few voices that mentions its accent is Calathea. The app labels it as Australian, but some users say it doesn’t actually sound very Australian.
Google says a fix is already rolling out
Google has acknowledged the issue. An official Google Nest Community account responded to the Reddit threads and confirmed that the company already fixed the problem in Google Home app version 4.11.
According to Google, the update should roll out to users by Wednesday. What exactly the fix changes is still unclear. Google didn’t explain whether it replaces the voices entirely or adjusts how they’re labeled so users know what accent they’re choosing.
Google has been gradually moving its smart home products away from Google Assistant and toward Gemini-powered experiences. That shift brings new AI features, but it also introduces small quirks like this one as Google fine-tunes the experience.
Voice assistants rely heavily on natural-sounding speech, so even small differences in accent can feel noticeable, especially if users expect something familiar. It’s another reminder that the transition to Gemini is a work in progress. Have you noticed unusual accents on Gemini voices on Google Home yet?
