The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition could represent the pinnacle of Samsung’s foldable technology. It’s slimmer and lighter than all previous models and offers a bigger display. According to recent rumors, the device will also have a much less noticeable display crease. It allegedly features a UFG (ultra-foldable glass) panel, a first for Samsung foldables.
Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition to feature UFG display, reducing crease visibility
Samsung foldables feature a UTG (ultra-thin glass) panel, adding strength to the plastic display. UTG offers better scratch resistance while maintaining the flexibility of the folding screen. The company allegedly plans to upgrade to UFG for the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. UFG is an advanced version of UTG with high strength for stronger protection.
Its 1.5R curvature in the folding read helps reduce the display crease, all the while retaining excellent S Pen recognition. According to display industry veteran Ross Young, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is the first Samsung foldable to feature UFG. “Likely due to the use of UFG for the first time,” Young responded to an X post by Ice Universe.

Rumors say the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition will debut on October 25. Samsung plans to release it in China and South Korea, with the former being the primary market. It aims to compete against the super slim Chinese foldables. The newly released Galaxy Z Fold 6 is too bulky and heavy for those. It is 5.6mm thick when unfolded and 12.1mm when folded.
The Special Edition model, meanwhile, is just 4.9mm/10.6mm thick. Its less prominent display crease is an added benefit. Samsung will likely face a lot of backlash for releasing a superior foldable just a few months after making people spend close to $2,000 on the Fold 6. Hopefully, it will bring similar upgrades to the regular model with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 next year.
