Samsung is actively working on its next major software update, One UI 9, based on Android 17. And interestingly, early leaks are giving away more than just new features. Hidden within the new firmware are visual assets that appear to show Samsung’s upcoming foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Wide Fold.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Wide Fold appear in fresh One UI 9 leak
It’s not unusual for pre-release firmware to hint at future devices. But this time, the references go beyond code strings. Actual images discovered inside One UI 9 by Android Authority and The Chipher Project align closely with previously leaked CAD renders, effectively validating both the designs.
The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, codenamed Q8, appears to stick closely to the design language of its predecessor. Samsung has been prioritizing refinement over reinvention lately, and the philosophy seemingly remains unchanged for the upcoming Fold. The company is focused on improving core aspects like hinge durability, crease visibility, and overall build quality rather than chasing a drastic redesign.
This leak also shows the Galaxy Z Wide Fold (or Fold 8 Wide), which bears the codename “H8.” This model stands out not just because it’s new, but because it appears to target a different use case entirely. Unlike the traditional Fold series, which emphasizes a book-style form factor, the Wide model comes with a wider screen in a 4:3 aspect ratio. It’s a foldable tablet of sorts.
Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold8 Wide are expected to debut at a Samsung Unpacked event rumored for July 22 in London. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 should accompany the duo, all running One UI 9 out of the box. Much like the Fold 8, the new Flip also focuses on refinement. Leaks hint at a new hinge mechanism aimed at improving durability and minimizing the display crease. More leaks should surface in the coming months.
