When it comes to foldable phones, one major concern is the durability of the folding display. With repeated opening and closing several times a day, many are worried that the screen might break. However, Samsung’s latest display innovation should alleviate those concerns. The company claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s folding screen can withstand up to 500,000 folds. This is another reason to upgrade to the latest Fold — its predecessor was rated for 200,000 folds.

Samsung proves foldable displays can last over a decade

Bureau Veritas, a global testing, inspection, and certification company, recently tested and verified Samsung Display’s latest foldable OLED panel. The firm conducted the test over 13 days at 25°C (77°F) and found the panel remained fully functional after 500,000 folds. This is a major achievement for Samsung Display, as the new benchmark is 2.5 times more than the company’s previous standard (200,000 folds).

Samsung says 500,000 folds is equal to over 10 years of use for average users who fold their phone about 100 times a day. If the user folds it more than 200 times a day (who does that, really?), then it translates to over 6 years. This shows that users no longer need to worry about display durability in foldable smartphones.

“As foldable OLED enters its seventh year of commercialization, we’ve achieved another meaningful breakthrough in both durability and design,” said Hojung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Display Product Planning Team at Samsung Display. “This new panel not only builds consumer confidence in foldable OLED durability but also underscores the technological advantage that makes Samsung Display distinguished in the industry.”

So, how did Samsung Display achieve this exceptional durability?

Well, the company developed a shock-resistant structure inspired by the design principles of bulletproof glass. Samsung made its outer Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) 50% thicker and added a new high-elastic adhesive between each layer inside its OLED panel. This new material offers over four times the recovery performance compared to the previous one. Furthermore, a flattening structure spreads shock evenly, and a titanium plate supports the display.

If you want the latest foldable OLED display, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the clear choice. Pre-orders end in just two days, so hurry to grab early adopter benefits from Samsung and SammyGuru.
