Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim tipped to feature a 5MP under-display camera

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim may bring a much-needed camera upgrade. The company is reportedly equipping the upcoming foldable with a 5MP under-display selfie camera. That may not sound impressive but the Fold lineup has been using the same 4MP UDC (under-display camera) since the Fold 3 in 2021. The Slim model may keep other cameras unchanged from the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim might finally upgrade Samsung’s under-display camera

Samsung introduced UDC to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in hopes of offering a more immersive full-screen experience to users. It placed a 4MP camera behind the main folding display, while a 10MP punch-hole selfie camera sits over the cover screen. Users can switch to the external camera when they need quality selfies and use the inner camera for video calls and other purposes when the device is unfolded.

The first-gen UDC solution was expectedly poor. Samsung improved things a bit in subsequent models but kept the hardware unchanged all the way to the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold 6. It was disappointing, to say the least. it appears the company will finally introduce an upgraded under-display camera to its foldables, starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim later this year. Too bad it’ll see a limited release.

The information comes from the Dutch publication GalaxyClub. The report also says that the Slim model will feature a 10MP selfie camera on the cover display and a 12MP ultrawide camera on the back. These appear to be the same cameras found on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The specs of the main rear camera and the telephoto zoom camera are not known. Samsung upgraded these two sensors last year.

The new foldable may launch in September

There have been contrasting rumors about the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim’s launch timeline. Some said the device would go official between September and October, while others hinted at a December release. It appears the former group of reports were true. A new report from the Korean media says Samsung will unveil the phone on September 25. The device will run Android 14 out of the box.

Samsung currently plans to release the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim in Korea and China. The aim is to compete against Chinese companies that have made much slimmer foldables than the standard Fold 6. Samsung’s Slim model will be just over 10mm thick when folded, compared to the 12.1mm thickness of the standard model. The use of a titanium backplate and lack of S Pen support should make it substantially lighter too.

With a thinner profile, Samsung is making the device wider, offering a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch main folding display. The two screens on the standard Fold 6 measure 6.3 inches and 7.6 inches, respectively. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim will reportedly come in black and cost around KRW 2.8 million (approximately $2,100) in Korea. The standard model costs KRW 2.23 million (approximately $1,670).
