It looks like a weird issue is causing chat histories in Google Messages to vanish for Samsung Galaxy users. They notice some threads, whether newer or older, lose their conversations. Neither Google nor Samsung has yet officially acknowledged the problem, though a few have shared possible explanations and troubleshooting steps.

A strange issue is affecting Google Messages chat history

Samsung is discontinuing its Messages app in July 2026. The company also encourages users to switch to Google Messages for a consistent messaging experience. However, after setting Google Messages as the default messaging app, some users appear to have started noticing issues with their chat history.

Based on reports and comments across Google Support forums and Reddit, Galaxy A52 users appear to be most affected. They have noticed that large sections of conversation history have vanished in some threads. The issue does not seem to affect every thread, but recent messages from earlier the same day are gone as well.

Other users, such as those with Galaxy S21 and A15 devices, are also experiencing similar problems. In fact, according to a Google Product Expert, the issue is part of a widely reported trend as Samsung officially phases out Samsung Messages in favor of Google Messages.

Possible causes and solutions

The expert says this often happens during the transition between messaging apps. It is usually related to a sync and re-indexing delay rather than permanent deletion. Google Messages needs time to re-index the Android SMS database (larger message histories can take 48 hours or longer). As such, you may not see some conversations during this process.

Another possibility is that the system may temporarily lose the ability to read the message log due to switching to another messaging app. Whatever the case, you should wait for up to 48 hours, keeping the phone connected to Wi-Fi so indexing can finish in the background. Meanwhile, you can try setting Samsung Messages back as the default SMS app.

Hopefully, these steps will fix the issue. That said, it is also possible that Google Messages is indeed encountering a bug that is causing chat history to disappear. We’ll let you know if Google or Samsung shares any statement on this matter.
