Samsung is stepping up its camera game with the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra. Rumors say the company will upgrade the ultrawide lens and the 3x zoom camera to 50MP sensors. If accurate, this would give the phone a powerful setup of a 200MP main camera alongside three 50MP cameras on the back. A recent leak revealed detailed specs for the rumored 50MP ultrawide camera, hinting at significant improvements in image quality.
Galaxy S25 Ultra set to wow with an all-new 50MP ultrawide camera
According to the ever-reliable tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s new 50MP ultrawide camera has an optical format of 1/2.52 inches. It’s practically the same size as the S24 Ultra’s 12MP lens (1/2.55 inches) but a higher resolution means we get smaller pixels (0.7µm instead of 1.4µm). Samsung also offers a wider aperture of f/1.9 instead of f/2.2, allowing more light into the camera for bright photos in all lighting conditions.
Overall, it’s a meaningful upgrade as Galaxy flagships have used the same 12MP ultrawide camera for five generations in a row (since the Galaxy S20 series). New hardware, coupled with improved camera software and processing algorithms, should significantly help improve the ultrawide image quality. If the rumored upgrade for the 10MP 3x zoom camera also materializes, the Galaxy S25 Ultra may set new bars for mobile photography.
Note that Samsung upgraded the Galaxy S24 Ultra to a 50MP 5x zoom camera, replacing the aging 10MP 10x solution. The 3x unit, meanwhile, has remained unchanged since the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The 200MP primary shooter debuted with the Galaxy S24 Ultra and will likely find its way into the 2025 model as well. Samsung typically re-uses the same camera hardware for a few years before upgrading to a newer sensor.
For the past few generations, the smaller Galaxy flagships have featured the same ultrawide and 3x zoom cameras as the Ultra. Unless Samsung shakes things up next year, the Galaxy S25 and S25+ should get the new 50MP solutions for a triple 50MP camera setup on the back. We are still awaiting information on the 2025 flagships’ selfie camera. You don’t have to wait for our Galaxy S25 mystery box program, though.
