Reports are swirling in about Samsung potentially launching a pair of smart glasses alongside the Galaxy S25 series next month. The new augmented reality (AR) glasses could be called the Samsung Switch or Galaxy Switch, a recent trademark application suggests. Or perhaps that could be the same for the recently announced XR headset.
Galaxy Switch could be Samsung’s XR headset or smart glasses
A few days ago, Samsung surprised everyone by officially unveiling its first-gen XR headset co-developed with Google and Qualcomm. While details about the device remain scarce, the company highlighted some advanced features powered by the all-new Android XR platform. Codenamed Project Moohan, the headset delivers immersive extended reality experiences with integrated AI capabilities.
This XR headset will go on sale sometime next year. Meanwhile, Samsung is rumored to be preparing to unveil new AR smart glasses next month. The glasses could debut alongside the Galaxy S25 series on January 22, 2025. It’s unclear whether it will be a full launch or a brief teaser. Either way, the Korean firm has two completely new products in the pipeline.
Amidst all this, Samsung applied for a trademark for the brand name “Samsung Switch”. First spotted by Galaxy Club, the official description for the branding reveals the company’s plans. The moniker covers the following product categories.
Headsets; wireless headsets; virtual reality headsets; headsets for virtual reality games; 3D glasses; smart glasses; virtual reality glasses; virtual reality goggles; head mounted augmented reality displays; augmented reality computer hardware; apparatus for generating virtual images; Virtual Reality [VR] motion simulators; wearable computers; head mounted displays.
This suggests Samsung Switch is the name for the new XR headset or the upcoming smart glasses. It’s also possible that it’s an umbrella brand for these product categories. Moreover, Samsung could eventually launch the products under the Galaxy Switch branding. The company often omits the Galaxy part from its trademark applications. More details are awaited.
