Samsung has confirmed that Galaxy Avatar will replace AR Emoji in One UI 7. While the new One UI version is yet to roll out, the company has started notifying users about this change. This update also enhances the augmented reality-powered feature with new tools. Samsung is expected to release One UI 7 beta later this month.
Galaxy Avatar replaces AR Emoji in One UI 7
Galaxy Avatar was first spotted at SDC 2024 in early October. It’s a new tool within the Advanced Features menu in One UI 7 Settings. An early version spotted at the developers’ conference last month showed AI and AR-powered features that let you create avatar photos, videos, stickers, and more. You can also design new outfits for your avatar.
In our coverage, we suspected Galaxy Avatar to be an upgraded version of AR Emoji because of their functional similarities. Samsung has now officially confirmed the same. We recently opened the AR Emoji app via the stock camera app on our Galaxy S24 Ultra and were welcomed by a banner announcing its rebranding to Galaxy Avatar in One UI 7.
Interestingly, Samsung published this banner long before the One UI 7 update rolled out — the stable version is coming in January 2025. Galaxy Avatar still doesn’t exist on Galaxy phones running One UI 6. However, Samsung already starting to notify users about it. The notice also revealed that some AR Emoji tools have been removed from the app.
AR Doodle, Quick Measure, and Deco Pic, which can be downloaded into AR Emoji in One UI 6 will be available as standalone apps in One UI 7. These tools will not be part of Galaxy Avatar. Samsung’s notice suggests the new feature will no longer have a place within the stock camera app on Galaxy phones. We will let you know when we have more information.
