Apple’s AI Glasses Shift Leads Samsung to Halt XR Display Project

Apple is discontinuing plans for an affordable XR device as it shifts its priority to AI smart glasses. This has prompted Samsung to halt development of the display project for the headset. The Korean firm will continue developing XR display solutions for its own product.
Apple abandons its affordable XR device plans
According to a report from TheElec, Samsung Display has decided to end the G-VR project. The project was focused on developing a glass-substrate-based micro-OLED display for Apple’s future XR device. It was originally expected to enter mass production after 2028. However, after Apple decided to discontinue development of the XR device, the Korean display maker will officially wind down the project in September 2026.
“As Apple shifts its focus from XR headsets to AI smart glasses, momentum behind the development of glass-substrate VR displays has disappeared,” said an industry source. The Cupertino giant now appears to be focusing on lighter, more practical AI wearable devices that come in handy in everyday life.
The G-VR project was a lower-cost alternative to the OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) displays used in Apple’s Vision Pro headset. The technology placed OLED layers on a glass substrate instead of using a silicon wafer. This could have helped Apple develop an affordable XR headset compared with the Vision Pro, which starts at $3,499. The Vision Pro uses high-end displays with a pixel density of around 3,386 pixels per inch (PPI)
Samsung was reportedly working on XR panels with a pixel density of around 1,600 to 1,700 PPI. It is worth mentioning that the company is expanding its XR display efforts in other areas and will continue developing OLEDoS technology for its future XR devices.
Samsung is also working on next-generation RGB OLEDoS technology. This solution puts OLED pixels on a wafer and uses a simpler panel structure. It could help reduce the complexity of the optical system in future smart glasses.
