Samsung has announced a huge investment plan for South Korea. The company will invest KRW 2,665 trillion (around $1.72 trillion) over the coming years to expand its semiconductor business and build new AI, display, battery, and robotics facilities across the country.

The investment covers chip production, foldable displays, AI data centers, green energy projects, smartphone manufacturing, and humanoid robots. The money will be split across several regions, with each focusing on different technologies.

Most of the money is going into chip production

Samsung is setting aside KRW 2,030 trillion ($1.32 trillion) to expand its semiconductor campuses in Pyeongtaek and the Yongin National Industrial Complex. The company is increasing production capacity as demand for AI chips continues to grow.

Samsung is also investing another KRW 625 trillion ($405 billion) across three regions:

  • Honam: KRW 425 trillion ($275.5 billion)
  • Chungcheong: KRW 140 trillion ($90.8 billion)
  • Yeongnam: KRW 60 trillion ($38.9 billion)

New chip plant, AI data center, and green energy projects

The Honam region will receive the biggest share outside Samsung’s main chip expansion. The company plans to build a new semiconductor fab in the Gwangju Semiconductor Cluster and a Digital Twin-based innovation hub for smart home appliances powered by Nvidia’s AI technology.

Samsung SDS will lead the construction of the Solasido AI Data Center. It’s meant to support South Korea’s defense, finance, and public sectors with domestic AI infrastructure instead of relying more heavily on foreign technologies.

Samsung C&T’s plans for the region include:

  • Nuclear-based hydrogen production and green hydrogen research
  • Solar power projects
  • A new global logistics center in Gochang

Better AI memory chips and foldable displays

Samsung has allocated KRW 140 trillion ($90.8 billion) for the Chungcheong region. The investment will expand chip production, display manufacturing, and battery development.

Around KRW 56 trillion ($36.3 billion) will be used to increase production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips at Samsung’s Cheonan and Onyang plants. Another KRW 67 trillion ($43.4 billion) will go toward manufacturing next generation foldable OLED panels and ultra high resolution micro displays for AR, MR, and VR devices in Asan.

Samsung SDI will build a next generation battery factory in Cheonan, while Samsung Electro-Mechanics will establish AI server packaging substrate production lines in Sejong.

AI, robots, and smartphones

The Yeongnam region is getting KRW 60 trillion ($38.9 billion). Samsung plans to upgrade manufacturing with AI and robotics while expanding production in several business areas.

The company wants to turn Gumi into a global smartphone manufacturing hub. It will also build facilities for physical AI and humanoid robot manufacturing.

In Busan, Samsung will expand MLCC production for smartphones and automobiles, while investments in Geoje and Ulsan will support solid-state batteries, battery energy storage systems, and advanced shipbuilding technologies.
