Samsung’s Rollable Galaxy Phone Moves Closer to Reality

Samsung’s ambition to make a rollable Galaxy smartphone seems closer to reality. The company has begun supply talks with its in-house display unit, Samsung Display. It reportedly aims to debut the device in the first half of 2028.

Samsung Display is in talks to supply panels for the rollable Galaxy phone

Korean media reports Samsung Display is in discussion to supply key panels to the MX unit for a rollable Galaxy phone. “Internally, we are developing a rollable phone with a target launch date in the first half of 2028, and there is a high possibility that Samsung Display panels will be adopted,” said a company official.

Samsung Display aims to lead the rollable panel market amid stiff competition from Chinese firms in the foldable segment. The company sees rollable displays as a new area where technological barriers are much higher. The industry believes the rollable market is still in its early stages. As a result, companies that secure early supply chains could set future technology standards while attracting clients.

However, unlike currently foldable panels, rollable displays are much more complex in structure. The panels will need to survive repeated bending and stretching when the screen rolls in and out. They must remain flat and preserve image quality in an open state.

Moreover, engineers will have to overcome a lot of hurdles to ensure the display does not form creases. They will need to reduce thickness and weight while keeping the internal roller mechanisms. However, Samsung is reportedly gearing up to launch the rollable phone. It might boast an 8-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung unveiled its rollable display technology at SID Display Week 2023. The company presented its Rollable Flex prototype, which expands more than 5 times, by rolling and unrolling like a scroll. It is unclear if the Korean firm is developing a similar solution for the rollable phone as well.
