A report last month suggested that Samsung might be preparing to retire LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X memory chips. Therefore, the company has stopped taking new orders for them. It turns out that report was correct. Samsung has officially announced that it’s discontinued both LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X memory chips.
It’s the end of the road for Samsung’s LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X memory
The product listings on Samsung Semiconductor’s website for both LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X memory chips now state that “this product has been discontinued,” which confirms the earlier rumors. That report also mentioned that Samsung will continue producing these through the end of the year but won’t take any new orders.
These are among the most widely used memory chips Samsung has ever produced. But the technology is now showing its age. LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X have been around for nearly a decade, powering everything from smartphones and tablets to even some laptops.
While some current chipsets still rely on LPDDR4X, the industry is steadily shifting toward LPDDR5. This newer standard not only increases speeds, but also brings better power management and improved bandwidth handling.
As the transition continues, we could see small performance differences between devices released at different times, depending on the memory used. This can affect things like app loading, multitasking, and gaming more than most people expect.
For consumers, this shift should bring noticeable gains, especially in the budget segment. That said, newer memory isn’t cheap, so those improvements could come with slightly higher prices, at least for now.
