Samsung is preparing for a significant update to its Tizen OS-based smart TVs. While the company hasn’t officially announced anything, it dropped a major hint at the ongoing development of Tizen OS 9.0. The update is expected to roll out sometime next year.
Tizen 9.0 update is on the way for Samsung smart TVs
A few days ago, Samsung shared its plans to introduce a new cryptographic security feature for its smart TVs, monitors, and digital signage products. Set to roll out in 2025, this feature will leverage its proprietary CryptoCore technology. In the fine print of this announcement, the company revealed that CryptoCore would be integrated into Tizen OS 9.0, confirming a new update for smart TV and monitor owners arriving next year.
This is the first time Samsung has publicly acknowledged Tizen 9. The company did not introduce the new version at its recent SDC 2024 conference. However, information about this update appeared on the TIZEN Docs website as early as May. Samsung labeled this early version as M1 (milestone) and has kept it inaccessible to the public. This indicates it is still working on the update and expects to roll it out next year.
Interestingly, Samsung has yet to widely distribute the Tizen OS 8.0 update, with many users of 2023 smart TV models still awaiting this upgrade. The company initially rolled out the new version for its 2024 models and is now extending it to 2023 modes. It is expected to complete the rollout for all compatible models by the end of 2024. It’s unclear if Tizen OS 9.0 will ship out of the box on the 2025 lineup of smart TVs and monitors.
Samsung’s new firmware policy promises seven years of updates for its TVs, so older models will also get Tizen 9.0. At least TVs launched in 2023 and later should receive the next version. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
