Samsung is preparing for a significant update to its Tizen OS-based smart TVs. The company recently launched Tizen 8.0, and the next version already seems to be in the pipeline. While it hasn’t officially announced Tizen 9.0, the Korean firm quietly confirmed the next big update coming in 2025.
Samsung confirms Tizen 9.0 is on the way for its smart TVs
A few hours ago, Samsung shared its plans to introduce a new cryptographic security feature for its Tizen-powered smart TVs, monitors, and digital signage products. This proprietary cryptography module is set to roll out in 2025, with the company fully integrating it into Tizen OS for enhanced security of these products.
In the fine print of this announcement, Samsung revealed that CryptoCore would be integrated into Tizen OS 9.0. The new version isn’t official yet, with users of its 2023 TV models still awaiting the Tizen 8.0 update. The latest update is currently only available for the 2024 lineup. It appears the company is simultaneously working on the next major update.
This is the first time Samsung has publicly acknowledged Tizen 9.0. It didn’t mention the update at its recent developers’ conference where a host of AI and Bixy upgrades were announced to its Tizen-powered TVs. This indicates the development is still in the early stages. The first reference to Tizen 9.0 on the Tizen Docs website dates back to May 2024.
The company labeled this early version as M1 (milestone) and has kept it inaccessible to the public. However, the recent announcement hints at the ongoing development of the big update for Samsung TVs and other Tizen-powered devices. The Korean firm is expected to complete the Tizen 8.0 rollout for all eligible models later this year.
It’s unclear if Samsung will ship its 2025 smart TV lineup with Tizen OS 9.0 pre-installed. The new version should be available to all models released in 2023 and later. The Korean firm’s new firmware policy promises seven years of updates for TVs, so expect many more major updates in the future. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
