There has been a lot of confusion around which processor Samsung will use to power the Galaxy S25 series of phones, thanks to the numerous reports and rumors. First, there were leaks that the Galaxy S25 series will utilize the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 SoC. However, the most recent report by the tipster Ice Universe claims that the Galaxy S25 will have the Snapdragon 8 Elite globally. If the report is correct, the Galaxy S25 series could get as many as 8 years of Android updates.

Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset was recently unveiled. The new SoC offers major performance improvements, apart from other upgrades over its predecessors. Notably, Qualcomm’s SVP and GM, Christopher Patrick revealed that the Snapdragon 8 Elite-based devices will get support for 8 years of Android updates. Qualcomm is working with smartphone OEMs to provide extended software support for their devices.
If the collaboration works out, we can expect the Galaxy S25 to offer 8 years of Android software updates. This will be a huge win for the end users buying the Samsung flagships. Mostly, users switch to a new device to enjoy the latest software experience. Over time, Android phones don’t get long support for software updates. However, it will be a huge milestone for Snapdragon 8 Elite devices as they will get a whopping 8 years of software updates.
Most latest features on Android devices are software-based, including the latest AI enhancements like the Galaxy AI. It’s worth mentioning that Qualcomm’s new flagship SoC supports software updates for that long period. But, it will not deliver these latest Android updates.
It will be solely depend on the phone makers to deliver these updates. Most Android phones nowadays already receive up to 6-7 years of Android updates. It would be interesting to see if Samsung will deliver 8 years’ worth of updates to the Galaxy S25 series.
