Those who travel often probably know how annoying it can be to keep pulling out your ID at airport checkpoints. Digital wallets promise to fix that, and the adoption has been quietly growing. Speaking of which, Samsung is making things easier for you by adding support for digital passports in Wallet.

Samsung Wallet adds digital passport support

Samsung now lets you store a US passport in Wallet through Samsung ID with CLEAR. Once you set it up, you can use your phone to verify your identity at more than 250 TSA checkpoints across the US. You just tap your device or scan a QR code instead of handing over a physical ID.

You should not treat this as a full replacement for your passport. You can use it for domestic flights and some venues like stadiums, but international travel still requires the physical passport book. In many cases, you will still need to carry a physical ID as backup, even within the US.

How to add your passport to Samsung Wallet

You can set it up in a few quick steps. Open Samsung Wallet and go to the Digital IDs section. Tap the plus icon, select Samsung ID with CLEAR, and follow the on-screen instructions. You will need a valid US passport to complete the process.

CLEAR verifies your identity during setup, and once done, your digital ID stays ready in your wallet. Samsung keeps your information secure with fingerprint or PIN protection and encryption powered by Samsung Knox.

Samsung Wallet already holds your cards, passes, and keys. With this update, you can rely on it even more when you travel, even if your physical passport still stays in your bag.

In a statement, Woncheol Chai, EVP and Head of Digital Wallet Team, Samsung MX said: “We’re thrilled to partner with CLEAR to bring CLEAR ID to Samsung Wallet, making airport travel and other identity verification experiences easier and frictionless for our users. Samsung ID with CLEAR represents the future and remains at the forefront of digital identity. Integrating passports into Samsung Wallet demonstrates our ongoing dedication to creating technology that truly makes life easier for our users. By enabling them to leave their physical IDs in their bag and rely on secure digital identity instead, we’re combining the best of convenience and security to help users get where they’re going.”
