A few days ago, Samsung launched its first Ultra-Wideband chip for cars, the Exynos Auto UA100. The Korean firm has today announced one more UWB chip, the Exynos Auto UA200. As you might have guessed, it is a more advanced offering with additional capabilities.
Samsung expands UWB chip portfolio for cars with the Exynos Auto UA200
The Exynos Auto UA200 chip features ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, which is coupled with advanced ranging capabilities for centimeter-level precision and powerful security. The chip integrates multiple IP blocks such as radio frequency (RF), baseband, non-volatile memory (NVM), a power management unit (PMU), and a micro-controller unit (MCU). Speaking of the MCU, it packs an integrated Cortex-M33 processor, which is designed for IoT and embedded applications.
The chip uses time-of-flight (ToF) and angle-of-arrival (AoA) technologies to achieve centimeter-level precision in distance measurement and 3D directional analysis. This technology accurately detects your location relative to the car and automatically controls the door.
Exynos Auto UA200 uses scrambled timestamp sequence (STS) technology to encrypt the time data of the signal. Its nanosecond pulse durations help measure real-time distances between the transmitter and receiver. Unlike traditional RSSI technology, this new STS technology helps instantly verify signals by checking the location of a hacked signal and the hackerโs actual position.
The chip also works with radar to monitor driversโ respiratory rates and supports child presence detection (CPD), a required feature in Europe from 2025. The Exynos Auto UA200 is much better than the UA100 in terms of performance, with six channels instead of two. It also has more memory, with eFlash increasing from 512KB to 2MB and SRAM from 256KB to 416KB.
Several top clients are already testing the Exynos Auto UA200 chip. If it performs well, Samsung could begin its mass production in the coming months.
