Samsung has announced its UFS 5.0 storage solution, setting a new benchmark for mobile memory performance. The new technology offers faster speeds and solid power efficiency to support on-device AI. The company plans to kick off mass production later this year.

Samsung’s UFS 5.0 storage sets a new benchmark for mobile speeds

Samsung developed UFS 5.0 based on the latest JEDEC embedded memory standard, delivering industry-leading performance. The new storage solution offers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8 GB/s and write speeds of up to 9.5 GB/s. In comparison with the previous UFS 4.1 storage, it achieves more than twice the read and write speeds.

As a result, UFS 5.0 will allow smartphones to run large language models (LLMs) more efficiently, reducing latency and improving response times for AI features. “In the era of on-device AI, storage devices are evolving into a key driver defining AI experiences,” said a company executive. “Samsung is setting a new standard for storage on the go and will continue to drive innovation for the next-generation mobile platform market.”

Apart from higher performance, Samsung has also improved power efficiency. The UFS 5.0 is over 40% more power-efficient than its predecessor, UFS 4.1. Thanks to clock gating and multi-voltage technologies, the memory can reduce the power required to transfer data. This means you can expect longer battery life in next-generation mobile devices.

Furthermore, Samsung has reduced the physical size of the storage package. The UFS 5.0 measures just 7.5mm x 13mm x 0.9 mm (16.7% smaller than its predecessor). The compact form factor gives manufacturers greater flexibility when fitting internal components on smartphones, wearables, and extended reality (XR) devices.

Samsung will begin mass production of UFS 5.0 in Q4 2026, with storage capacities reaching up to 1TB. There is chatter that select Galaxy S27 models, expected to debut in early 2027, may feature this new storage technology for next-level on-device AI capabilities.
