Samsung Rolls Out October Security Patch with 42 Fixes, 7 Critical

by | Oct 8, 2024 | News, Updates

Shortly after rolling out the October 2024 security patch to the Galaxy S24 FE, Samsung published the patch details. This month’s security release addresses 42 vulnerabilities, including 30 Android OS fixes from Google. At least seven of these vulnerability fixes are confirmed to be critical patches. More Galaxy devices will receive this update in the coming days.

Samsung’s October 2024 security update patches 42 vulnerabilities

Samsung rolls out new security patches to Galaxy smartphones and tabelts every month. These updates contain fixes for various vulnerabilities in Android OS and One UI components. The October build, aka SMR (Security Maintenance Release), brings 42 such fixes, the Korean firm revealed through its website. These include two critical fixes in Android and five in One UI.

The five One UI flaws are all “out-of-bounds write” vulnerabilities in librtppayload.so, a system component in Samsung’s custom software. These security issues affected Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer. While user interaction was required to trigger the vulnerabilities, threat actors could exploit the flaws remotely to execute arbitrary code with system privilege.

As usual, Samsung hasn’t detailed all 12 Galaxy flaws patched with the October SMR. This is to avoid potential exploits before the updates are rolled out widely. As said earlier, only the Galaxy S24 FE has received the latest security patch. The Korean firm should soon release the update for more devices, including the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 6. We will let you when when the update arrives.

You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app. Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install to see if you have a new software update pending download. If no updates are available, wait a few days and check again. Samsung is readying Android 15-based One UI 7 for Galaxy phones and tablets. Beta testing begins later this year, followed by a stable release in early 2025.
