Samsung Restores GIF Capture to Smart Select in Latest Update

by | Oct 16, 2024 | News, Samsung Apps, Updates

After removing it on One UI 6.1.1, Samsung has reinstated GIF animation capture to Smart Select. A new update for the app brings back the handy tool that lets Galaxy users create GIFs on the fly. The update recently rolled out and may take a while to reach users globally. It will be available on Galaxy phones and tablets via the Galaxy Store.

Smart Select update brings back GIF animation capture

Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 update substantially changed Smart Select. Most notably, the company removed the Oval capture option and GIF creator. The latter was a useful feature to record GIFs from the screen. You could save a short recording as a GIF file. Samsung faced some backlash for removing the tool without a proper explanation.

Thankfully, GIF capture wasn’t gone forever. Samsung later revealed that it tried to make Smart Select smarter in One UI 6.1.1 with AI. It couldn’t implement the desired changes without removing GIF capture. Hence, it temporarily dropped the tool to work on it later. The company always planned to reintroduce the function with a separate update.

The said update is now rolling out to Galaxy users. Version 5.8.56.4 of Samsung Capture released via the Galaxy Store adds GIF animation capture to Smart Select. The update also introduces the “pin” feature to the toolbar that appears after selecting an area. Additionally, you can now drag the selected area to adjust its position after making an initial selection.

Samsung has also improved the touch range for easier adjustment of the selected area. We recently spotted the update in the Galaxy Store, though it appears to be a limited release. The Korean firm should widely roll out the new version to Galaxy devices globally in the coming days. You can check for new updates from the Menu tab in the Galaxy Store.
