Samsung has issued a voluntary recall for certain slide-in electric ranges due to a potential fire hazard. It recalled over 1.1 million electric stoves sold across the US between May 2013 and August 2024. 30 different model variants are being recalled, with prices ranging from $1,250 to $3,050. The company took the step after reports of nearly 250 fire accidents involving the products, seven of which caused pet deaths.

Samsung recalls electric stoves due to fire safety hazard

The affected Samsung electric stoves have a design flaw. Their front-mounted knobs can be activated through accidental contact by humans or pets. This poses a fire hazard if flammable objects are on top of the range. There have been over 300 reports of such unintentional activation of the front-mounted knobs, including nearly 250 fires. These fires caused 18 extensive property damage, 40 injuries, and 7 pet deaths.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says Samsung sold these ovens through its official website, Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other appliance stores nationwide. A whopping 1,120,905 units are eligible for a recall. Samsung doesn’t have to take back the units and issue a refund, though. Instead, it will offer free knob locks or covers to owners of the affected products.

Owners of the following Samsung slide-in electric range models can request these free locks and covers. You can find the model number on the inside upper left corner of the oven door or inside the storage bin located at the bottom of the oven. Samsung’s newer electric ranges have a hybrid knob. Many other brands offer similar products with enhanced safety measures. Regardless of range type or manufacturer, Samsung advises you to never place, leave, or store anything on the top of your electric stove when not in use. You should always keep children and pets away from these products and turn off the appliance after cooking.
