Samsung Messages has been in a somewhat complicated situation since December 2024. It even briefly disappeared at one point, only to return with the Galaxy S25 series. Now, Samsung has confirmed that it’s sunsetting the Messages app and has asked users to switch to Google Messages instead.

Some of you don’t have to switch from Samsung Messages

According to updated notice posted on the website, Samsung Messages will be discontinued in July, and those using it will have no choice but to switch to Google Messages. Here’s the interesting part: none of this affects you if you live outside the US. Samsung has clarified that it’s “applicable to the US market only.”

Samsung Messages discontinue notice

That’s good news for users outside the US, as they won’t be forced to switch. Some people really like the user interface of Samsung Messages, which is one of the main reasons why switching feels like a tough pill to swallow.

It’s also important to note that devices running Android 11 or older won’t be affected. If you’re on Android 12 or 13, you may need to manually replace the Samsung Messages icon in your home screen dock.

If you’re still using Samsung Messages, you’ll likely see a prompt to switch to Google Messages. You can also install Google Messages yourself and set it as your phone’s default messaging app. Samsung Messages has been around for years. For many users, it was the default way to text on Galaxy phones. But that era is over.
