Counterpoint is back with its quarterly smartphone market share report for the third quarter of 2024 in the US. Apple continues to hold the lion’s share of the market, with 53% of all smartphone sales. Meanwhile, Samsung remains the top choice for Android buyers in the US, even in Q3 2024.
Samsung continues as the top choice among Android buyers in the US
Even though Samsung’s year-on-year sell-in dropped by 13%, it still managed to maintain the same momentum as Q2 (24%). Samsung’s 23% smartphone market share in Q3 2024 is followed by Lenovo (including Motorola), HMD, and other brands.
We know the Android market is more cluttered than ever, and Samsung isn’t the only player. Better put, it’s not the only giant in the arena. It’s rubbing shoulders with Google, BBK-owned OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, and their sub-brands, and others. While Motorola and HMD have carved out a space for themselves, Google’s place in the top five is still up in the air, according to data shared by CR.
Could the next third quarter be even better for Samsung?
It just might be, and here’s why. While much of this is in consumers’ hands (and choices), if rumors are anything to go by, Samsung has a solid lineup for 2025. This includes the upcoming Galaxy S25 series, launching early next year. Later on, Samsung plans to launch at least four foldables in the US. Out of which, one would be an affordable foldable.
Samsung plans to launch an affordable foldable: the Galaxy Z Fold FE, and the stakes are high that it could land in more hands than ever. Samsung needed to mass-market its foldables at some point, and 2025 might just be the right moment to steal the show.
It could reach more people, especially those who’ve always wanted to try a foldable, but the price tag is something folding… err, holding them back.
