Samsung Eyes Potential Partnership with OpenAI for ‘New Samsung’ Vision

by | Feb 3, 2025 | News

The High Court of Seoul today cleared Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong of stock manipulation charges. He was facing a five-year prison sentence, but now, he’s off the hook. Lee Jae-yong is known for his knack for mergers and bringing more companies into the fold, which has, if anything, sparked more innovation. Now that he’s free of these charges, he’s gearing up for his “New Samsung” plans. A new report from Korea suggests that Samsung’s chief Lee Jae-yong and OpenAI’s chief Sam Altman will meet on February 4 local time in Seoul during Altman’s business visit.

Samsung and OpenAI may be up for something great

In a detailed report by MK Daily (in Korean), the publication outlines what “New Samsung” could look like now that Lee Jae-yong is free from charges. During his tenure, he’s led several key acquisitions and partnerships, including Harman. His upcoming meeting with Sam Altman will mark a significant moment, as it’s been a while since Lee has set up a meeting with a global tech leader.

Samsung might need to restructure its Foundry business, with a special focus on artificial intelligence, which is here to stay. With OpenAI already leading the charge, Samsung may consider joining forces with ChatGPT’s creator. For what it’s worth, Samsung Foundry’s recent performance has fallen behind its competitors, but there’s still hope. In fact, Lee Jae-yong could help OpenAI by collaborating on its chip demands.

And who knows? There could be more in store for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy phones as well. OpenAI has already partnered with Apple, and there are rumors that ChatGPT could soon be integrated into Samsung TVs. So, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine a deeper partnership between OpenAI and Samsung for phones, tablets, home appliances, and, of course, TVs. But, as the report suggests, the major focus could be on Samsung Foundry. It’s in dire need of a revamp.

We’ll likely hear more about what’s to come in the next few days, so stay tuned for any updates.
