Samsung Explores Charging Galaxy Ring Directly from a Smartphone

Samsung is exploring new ways to enhance the Galaxy experience with a newly published patent showing a novel way to charge the Galaxy Ring. The concept involves placing the smart ring into a dedicated slot on the back of a Galaxy phone, allowing it to recharge safely. While the idea may seem ambitious, it highlights Samsung’s ongoing efforts to innovate and enhance the Galaxy ecosystem.

Samsung shows off a new way to charge the Galaxy Ring

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently published a Samsung patent describing a system where the Galaxy Ring could be charged directly from a smartphone. The wearable would be placed in a secure slot on the back of a phone (or possibly a specialized case), where it could not only recharge but also transmit health and fitness data to the connected device.

The patent images showcase both regular and foldable phones, suggesting that Samsung is considering multiple form factors for this feature. However, the application does not clearly state whether the charging slot would be integrated into the phone itself or if it would be part of an accessory, such as a dedicated case. Either way, it makes charging the Galaxy Ring more convenient.

Currently, the Galaxy Ring draws power via its specialized charging case that supports both USB-C and wireless charging. The new patent envisions eliminating this dependency, allowing the ring to charge directly through a smartphone. This could function similarly to Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare, aka reverse wireless charging. You can already use this feature to wirelessly charge accessories like earbuds and watches.

Additionally, the patent mentions that the system would include sensors to ensure proper placement of the ring. If misaligned, the phone would send notifications to guide users in positioning the ring correctly for optimal charging. This would minimize power loss and heat generation.

Will Samsung bring this idea to life?

While the concept is intriguing, several design challenges arise. If integrated directly into a phone, a Galaxy Ring charging slot could make devices bulkier or require an internal layout redesign. A built-in charging mechanism could also increase prices. A case-based solution might be more practical, but it could result in a noticeably thick accessory that some users may find inconvenient.

Simply put, we may never see Samsung bring this idea to life. Only a fraction of design patents ever turn into real products, and this doesn’t look like one of those.
