Samsung is reportedly considering moving its factories from Mexico to the U.S. This move is pushed by U.S. government policies under President Trump’s administration. This could be a strategic decision to minimize the impact of newly introduced tariffs on imported goods.
Samsung may move factories from Mexico to the U.S.
The White House recently posted an article that mentioned Samsung and its compatriot LG in its list of “50 wins for the American people in President Trump’s first 50 days.” According to the White House, the two South Korean electronics giants “are considering moving their plants in Mexico to the U.S.” now that President Trump is back in office.
Although the White House post did not specify which products the new plants would manufacture, it included a link to The Korea Economic Daily’s report that reveals a couple of details. The report says that Samsung is planning to move some of its dryer production from its factory in Querétaro, Mexico, to its U.S. home appliances plant in Newberry, South Carolina. In its Querétaro plants, Samsung makes refrigerators, washing machines, and dryers. The firm sells these in Latin America and the U.S. It also manufactures TVs in Tijuana, Mexico.
This decision came after President Trump announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada. As of now, Samsung’s Newberry plant makes washing machines. The company built it in 2018 due to U.S. trade rules on Korean washing machines.
Ever since President Trump took office, he has been determined to make the U.S. a global manufacturing hub by imposing tariffs on countries that impose substantial duties on U.S. exports. Samsung has already invested billions of dollars in the U.S. to manufacture its cutting-edge semiconductor chips. Following the latest policy shifts, the company could now extend its investments by setting up home appliance factories. With increasing tariffs on imported goods, other global manufacturers may also move production to the U.S. to minimize costs.
