Samsung is already seeing operational impact from its ongoing labor dispute. It comes just a day after thousands of workers gathered to protest against the company’s bonus system. The situation appears to be escalating faster than what was expected.

Early signs of trouble as Samsung protest affects chip production

According to union officials, as quoted in a Reuters report, Samsung’s overall chip production took a hit during the overnight shift shift following the protest. Foundry output seemingly dropped by 58%, while memory chip production declined by as much as 18%. Many workers skipped their scheduled shifts after attending the rally.

Even though this wasn’t an official strike, the incident shows how quickly the situation can affect Samsung’s core business. Its semiconductor plants are designed to run around the clock, so missing even one shift can disrupt output planning and delivery timelines.

If this trend continues, Samsung could face delays in fulfilling orders, especially at a time when global demand for advanced chips remains competitive. Clients relying on steady foundry supply may start looking at alternatives if disruptions become frequent.

The bigger concern is what happens next. The union has already warned of a full-scale strike starting May 21 if demands are not met. That action could last up to 18 days and would likely cause far more serious damage to production across key facilities like Pyeongtaek.

For what it’s worth, Samsung hasn’t commented on the reported drop in output. But the early signs suggest the company may have limited time to reach a compromise before the situation worsens. We’ll keep you posted with whatever happens next.
