Samsung’s Blood Glucose Monitor for Galaxy Watch Is a Work in Progress

by | Jan 28, 2025 | Galaxy Watch, News

Smart wearables are more cluttered than ever, with so many choices and picks. But it’s not as hard as a rock to figure out which one should work for you. You should prioritize the health features it’s promising, and the maker should have a solid reputation for delivering on those promises. For years, Samsung and Apple have led the pack in the smart wearables space. And now, Samsung is teasing a non-invasive blood glucose monitoring feature for its upcoming batch of smartwatches.

Samsung’s non-invasive blood glucose monitor for Galaxy Watch is in the works, exec confirms

At Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung made several major announcements, including the launch of the Galaxy S25 trio, the showcase of the Galaxy S25 Edge, and teasers for Android XR and a tri-fold device. The company also hosted a Health Forum in San Jose, where Samsung’s Senior Vice President, Hon Pak, discussed the company’s non-invasive blood sugar monitoring features in detail, according to Android Authority.

“What I’m really excited about is our team, as you may have assumed, we are working on a noninvasive optically-based continuous glucose monitor. I can’t tell you the time [of the launch], but I’m very excited about the progress we are making, and this, if we do it right, will be a game-changer,” said Hon Pak during a press briefing.

Tom’s Guide also highlighted an editorial in which Pak provided more insight. Pak explained, “Blood glucose is a big area of focus for us [Samsung].” He revealed that the company has been developing a “sensor algorithm that predicts early signs of diabetes.” If successful, this technology could indeed be transformative. I share Pak’s optimism and hope that Samsung will execute it effectively.

That said, the FDA’s response to this technology remains uncertain. Notably, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already issued a warning, advising people against purchasing smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose levels. The FDA stated, “They claim to use non-invasive techniques. These smartwatches and smart rings do not directly test blood glucose levels.”
