Samsung Aims to Bring EV Battery Tech to Galaxy Phones

by | Jan 15, 2025 | News

Samsung plans to bring its advanced EV (electric vehicle) battery technology to smartphones. The company aims to use the stacking method to increase the battery capacity without making the device bulky. It is currently setting up a pilot production line for the new batteries and will decide on mass production later this year based on the pilot’s success.

Future Galaxy phones could use Samsung’s stacking battery technology

Samsung SDI, the Korean behemoth’s battery manufacturing unit, currently produces smartphone batteries using the “flat jelly roll” method. In this method, battery components are packed loosely, which can lead to bending or damage of the electrodes due to the natural swelling that occurs during charging and discharging. The stacking method addresses this issue by tightly layering the components.

Moreover, tighter packaging of components frees up some space inside the battery, allowing for added capacity. Reports suggest staked batteries offer up to 10% more capacity in the same physical size. In practice, you can get a 5,500mAh battery inside the Galaxy S25 Ultra without affecting its size (the weight could increase).

Samsung already applies stacking technology to its 5th-gen EV batteries — upgraded from the flat jelly roll method in 2020. The company has also been mulling introducing it to smaller batteries for phones and tablets, but nothing has materialized yet. However, a new report coming from Korea suggests it is close to achieving the goal.

The Korean behemoth is currently developing a pilot line with the stacked method for small battery production. It aims to complete the pilot line in the first half of 2025. If it runs smoothly, Samsung will decide to invest in a mass production line by the end of the year. The firm will build the mass production line either in Vietnam, which already hosts a small battery pack partner and facility, or in Malaysia, home to a cylindrical battery factory.

“Since the small battery division is in charge of cylindrical batteries, it is more likely that small batteries will be produced in Malaysia, where the existing plant is located, rather than in a new one,” a person familiar with Samsung SDI’s plans revealed.
