Quick Share May Be Coming to iPhones and MacBooks

by | Nov 5, 2024 | News, Samsung Apps

After Windows PCs, Quick Share may be coming to iPhones and MacBooks for seamless file-sharing. While evidence is sparse, hints suggest Google could be working toward a cross-platform rollout. It may still be some time before the app is available for Apple devices, though.

Google drops hint at Quick Share for iPhones and MacBooks

Formerly called Nearby Share, Google rebranded its file sharing app to Quick Share after merging it with Samsung’s Quick Share. It’s now the built-in file sharing tool for all Android devices. Google has also released a Windows version, allowing Android users to seamlessly transfer files to their Windows computers. The company may now be working on rolling out Quick Share to iPhones and MacBooks.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman discovered early evidence suggesting the ongoing development of the app for Apple devices. He explained the technical tidbits of this discovery in this post at Android Authority. A Google engineer dropped the hint when describing a recent bug fix for Nearby Connections, a peer-to-peer networking API, on GitHub under Google’s Nearby repository.

They noted that the update improves Quick Share’s usability on iPhones and Macs. Since these devices do not support Quick Share just yet, this hints at Google’s ongoing work or plans for the future. The company has been regularly updating the Windows app for enhanced functionality and reliability. A native app for Apple devices will make cross-platform file sharing substantially easier and more convenient.

Currently, Android and iOS operating systems lack features that create a cohesive, cross-platform ecosystem. Google is seemingly seeking ways to bridge this gap. In the meantime, Android users can utilize the open-source NearDrop app to send files to macOS devices. If Quick Share eventually comes to iPhones and Macs, it would simplify file sharing between the two platforms, boosting productivity for everyone.
