Recent rumors suggest Samsung might use MediaTek’s next-gen flagship smartphone processor in the Galaxy S25 series. Today, the Taiwanese chipmaker officially launched this chipset, the Dimensity 9400. It brings notable CPU, GPU, and NPU boost over its predecessor. The first phone powered by the new processor arrives later this year.
MediaTek launches the Dimensity 9400 amid Galaxy S24 rumors
The Dimensity 9400 is MediaTek’s first 3nm mobile processor. Fabricated on TSMC’s 2nd-gen 3nm process, the same process used for the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s A18 Pro chip, the new solution keeps its predecessor’s “All Big Core” architecture. It features four prime CPU cores and four mid-cores, with no efficiency “small” cores. MediaTek offers one Cortex-X925, three Cortex-X4 cores, and four Cortex-A720 cores.
The new MediaTek chip runs at a peak speed of 3.62GHz, delivering up to 35% faster single-core performance and 28% faster multi-core performance. The company promises up to 35% faster app cold launch speed, 100% more L2 cache, 50% more L3 cache, and support for the industry’s fastest LPDDR5X DRAM (10,667 Mbps). Coupled with TSMC’s 3nm process, the Dimensity 9400 brings 40% more power efficiency too.
The chipset integrates the 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU with ARM’s fifth-gen GPU architecture. Running at 1,612MHz, the GPU is touted to deliver 41% faster peak performance, 40% faster raytracing performance, and 44% more power efficiency. Additionally, MediaTek claims to raise the bar for flagship smartphone chips with record-breaking NPU performance and efficiency, including 80% faster LLM prompt performance.
The Dimensity 9400 also offers advanced gaming technologies and next-gen generative AI capabilities. Its Imagiq 1090 ISP supports up to 320MP cameras and allows HDR video capture at all zoom ranges. It is currently the only flagship chip to offer this feature. The chip supports up to 24bit/384KHz Bluetooth audio (v5.4), tri-band Wi-Fi 7, and a wide range of 4G and 5G bands. It can handle WQHD+ displays at a 180Hz refresh rate.
Samsung could bring MediaTek to its flagship phones
Last month, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S10 series with the Dimensity 9300+. These are the first flagship tablets to run a MediaTek processor. The company may now bring MediaTek to its flagship phones too, starting with the Dimensity 9400 in the Galaxy S25. While nothing is confirmed yet, it appears increasingly likely. We can expect more concrete information in the coming weeks as Samsung gears up for the Galaxy S25 launch.
