Galaxy Z Fold 7 Thickness Explained: Is it Really 3.9mm Thick?

When early rumors claimed the Galaxy Z Fold 7 would be just 4.5mm thick when unfolded, fans were already impressed. But recent leaks have taken that number even further, revealing a shockingly slim 3.9mm unfolded profile. That isn’t the full story, though. While Samsung’s next foldable is pushing the limits of smartphone thinness, there’s an explanation why both figures are correct.

Galaxy Z Fold 7’s actual thickness is a matter of perspective (and bumpers)

Yes, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 3.9mm thick when unfolded — but there’s a catch. That 4.5mm figure from earlier leaks included the slight rubber bumpers or bezel protrusions around the internal display, which act as protective buffers when the device is shut or falls on the floor. These add a fraction of a millimeter, but enough to confuse earlier spec leaks.

The actual thickness of the device’s main body, with no bumpers accounted for, is 3.9mm. This would make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 the thinnest foldable phone ever made, shaving off nearly 2mm compared to the Fold 6 (which was 5.6mm when unfolded). Even though the earlier 4.5mm figure wasn’t wrong, it may not show up in marketing spec sheets for obvious reasons. Samsung has always measured device thickness like this.

This new unfolded profile also helps explain another spec about the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s thickness: it is reportedly 8.9mm (or maybe 9mm) thick when folded. That math makes sense — 4.5mm per side brings the total up to 9mm. Samsung seems to have dramatically improved hinge design and internal layering to keep the thickness under 9mm — another big leap from the Fold 6’s folded thickness of 12.1mm.
