The update screen showed a date from November 2025, not January 2026, which immediately raised eyebrows. Putting those theories to rest, Google told Android Authority that it’s just a “display-only issue.” According to the company, the problem is purely visual. The incorrect November 2025 date is the result of a labeling error, not an actual downgrade or a redeployment of old software.

“We are aware that some users are seeing an outdated “Google Play system update” date. This is a display-only issue. It does not affect device performance or security. We appreciate your patience and feedback as we work on a fix to ensure the labeling accurately reflects your current version,” a Google spokesperson told Android Authority.

While it would be interesting to know how a mistake like this slipped through in the first place, the end result is mostly harmless. Device security, performance, and functionality aren’t affected, and users are still running the correct, up-to-date Play system build.
