Samsung Galaxy device owners are still waiting for the stable Android 15-based One UI 7.0 update — the Korean firm has promised to roll out the update in April 2025. On the other hand, Google has surprised everyone with its early release plan for Android 16. The company will release the official version of Android 16 in June 2025, which is earlier than its usual August release window.
Google’s “Trunk Stable” model helps to develop Android 16 faster
Google’s President of the Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, confirmed to Android Police that the company is on track to meet its self-imposed target date. Samat said, “So far, so good. I’ve never had a release where at this point the bug count was where I wanted it to be, but the team is working really hard, and we’re excited about getting it there.”
Back in November 2014, Google confirmed that the next major release would launch in Q2 2025. The company is sticking to its word and plans to release Android 16 as promised. The main reason for this early release plan is Google’s adoption of the “Trunk Stable” development model. This new strategy allows everyone working on Android to contribute to the same branch of code.
“We can build the entire system more regularly and more often. That’s opposed to all working on different branches, and then we merge them all at the end. Then we need a lot of time to work out problems and challenges.” Samat said.
Samsung may directly jump to One UI 8.0
Meanwhile, Samsung is also said to release the next generation Android 16-based One UI 8.0 update as per its old schedule. This might be possible because of the early arrival of Android 16. Also, it appears that One UI 8.0 will mainly focus on improvements to its existing features, as One UI 7.0 is already a significant upgrade in the history of One UI.
In addition to that, Samsung has reportedly skipped the plan for One UI 7 incremental updates: One UI 7.1 and One UI 7.1.1. It will directly release One UI 8.0. Rumor has it that Samsung may release the stable One UI 8.0 update between October and November this year. Only time will tell, but for now, we are excited to see the upcoming new features of Android 16.
