Google appears to be cooking up something new for its Find Hub, and it may finally add a sharper edge to how you track people, not just devices. The feature is still under wraps, but early clues suggest the company isn’t just tinkering around the edges this time.

New Find Hub feature hints at Precision Finding rival

The real substance comes from findings in a recent Google Play Services beta (v26.20.30), first spotted by Android Authority. New code strings reference a “People Finding” feature in Find Hub, including alerts that notify you when a nearby friend is actively searching for you. That “nearby” wording is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Right now, Find Hub already lets users share live locations, much like Google Maps. This new layer hints at something more dynamic, possibly guiding users in real time when they are physically close. Think less like a static map pin and more like a hot-and-cold game, with your phone acting as the guide.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because Apple has already paved the way with Precision Finding. That system uses directional cues to point you straight to a nearby person or device. Google may be trying to close that gap, and it has some catching up to do.

The big question is hardware. Bluetooth could make this feature widely accessible, but Ultra Wideband, or UWB, would allow far more precise tracking. References to “ranging” in the code suggest UWB, though that would limit availability to supported devices for now.

All said, this looks promising, but it’s too early to draw firm conclusions. Google has laid some groundwork, yet the full picture remains unclear. If it executes well, Find Hub could evolve into a much smarter tool for close-range interactions.
