Galaxy Z Fold 8, Flip 8, Wide Fold May Skip The M14 OLED Upgrade

In the coming months, Samsung will take the wraps off its new foldables. Some early details about these devices have started to emerge, and a recent report suggests we may not see display upgrades in the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and Galaxy Z Wide Fold (tentative name).
Samsung won’t bless the upcoming foldables with M14 OLED
According to Korean outlet ET News, the upcoming 2026 foldables will retain OLED panels that use M13 material. In fact, Samsung Display’s latest OLED material is M14, which we also see in the Galaxy S26 Ultra and other models. But if the report is anything to go by, it won’t be coming to the upcoming foldables.
There are clear benefits to using M14 OLED material. For one, it’s over 20–30% brighter than M13, and it also appears to last longer than the previous generation. However, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and Galaxy Z Wide Fold will miss out on the M14 upgrade.
That said, it’s not all bad. A source told the publication there will still be some improvements. We could see better performance as well as improved color accuracy. Generally speaking, the current OLED tech used in these smartphones is already quite good. While an upgrade would bring some gains, M13 isn’t bad at all.
Samsung has been using M13 OLED for over three generations now, especially in its foldables. It first debuted in the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 in 2024. The same display tech was then used in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Beyond that, we could also see some nice refinements, such as a crease-free display, hopefully.
Samsung’s decision is fairly understandable. The ongoing memory chip shortage and rising costs could make a price hike inevitable. On the sidelines of CES 2026, Samsung co-CEO and MX head TM Roh said that a price increase is likely, and this move may help the company keep prices somewhat in check.
