Samsung has released a new update for the Galaxy S20 FE and Galaxy S21 series in the US and a few other markets. Sadly, it isn’t the update you might have wished for. The devices aren’t receiving One UI 6.1.1. The company is only pushing the September 2024 security patch.
Galaxy S21 and S20 FE receive the September security update
The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra are receiving the latest update in Europe and the US. The update for the European units bears the firmware build number G99*BXXSCGXH7, while that for the US units is G99*USQSCGXH2 (carrier-locked variants). In both regions, the update only contains the latest security fixes. “The security of your device has been improved,” the official changelog states.
The latest update for the Galaxy S20 FE also has the same changelog. As of this writing, we can confirm the rollout in the US, where carrier-locked variants are picking up the build number G781USQSIHXH2 or G781VSQSGHXH3. Samsung should soon release the September update for these S series devices in other markets. The build number may vary but expect the changelog to remain unchanged.
As said earlier, the update is all about the latest security fixes. This month’s security maintenance release (SMR) contains 67 vulnerability patches. The devices aren’t getting anything else. While the Galaxy S20 FE is no longer eligible for feature updates, the Galaxy S21 series should get Android 15 and One UI 7.0. However, the 2021 flagships may not receive One UI 6.1.1. These phones aren’t powerful enough to run advanced AI features.
If you are using any of these phones and haven’t yet installed the September security patch, watch out for an update in the coming days. Samsung will soon roll out the update globally and expand the latest SMR to other eligible models. The company will also push the One UI 6.1.1 update to more devices in the coming days, clearing up the way for One UI 7.0 beta, which may begin in late September or early October.
