by | Aug 8, 2024 | Galaxy S, News, Updates

The floodgates to Samsung’s August security update have really opened. The new security patch is rapidly hitting more Galaxy phones. The Galaxy S20 FE and Galaxy Xcover 7 are the latest to pick up the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release). The Galaxy S24’s August update has also expanded beyond the US.

August security update lands on the Galaxy S20 FE and Xcover 7

Over the past few days, Samsung has released its August security patch, aka SMR, for the Galaxy F55, Galaxy M55, Galaxy S24, and Galaxy S23 in various regions. The rollout for the two flagship lineups began in the US, while the two mid-range models received the update in India. The company is gradually expanding the update to other markets, with the Galaxy S24 recently picking it up in Europe.

It is simultaneously rolling out the August SMR to other eligible models. The Galaxy S20 FE is receiving the latest security update in the US. The update is live for carrier-locked units with the firmware build number G781USQSIHXG1. Samsung should soon release the new SMR for the aging Fan Edition smartphone in other markets. The device is on its last legs and won’t receive One UI 7.0.

The Galaxy Xcover 7 is another Samsung phone that recently joined the August update party. The rollout has begun in Europe, where users are receiving the build number G556BXXS5BXG1. Interestingly, despite the build number suggesting a security update, the official changelog says it brings Circle to Search to the device. Since it’s a Google function, maybe Samsung enabled support from its side.

If you are unaware, Circle to Search lets you quickly run a Google search for anything on the screen. Long press the home button and select the object/text you want to search. Galaxy Xcover 7 users can use this feature following the August update. The August SMR itself contains 50 vulnerability fixes, two of which are critical security flaws. More Galaxy devices will receive this update in the coming days.
